With the changes of the seasons here let’s boost our immune system, stay healthy and avoid colds.  Here are some signs to look for and pointers along the way:

  1.  Catch a Snotty nose quick!!!– Snot is a breading ground for bateria and virus.  Use a netti pot with warm salt water as soon as you get snotty to clean out the nasal passage and eliminate germs.  Then gargle with warm salt water to clear the throat area too.  If you are snotty you probably missed a clue already like dryness, fatigue, white coated tongue or stinky breath.  Look for these clues and jump on the steps below!
  2.   Prevent and Eliminate dryness!!!  OIl Massage is the best!!!Oil Massage is the BEST!!!   If your skin is dry, this is a sign that your lymph system is dry which lowers your bodies potential to fight off invaders.  We need to stay well lubed outside and inside.  Use an oil like seaseme, coconut, or sunflower oil and put some in your nostrils and ears.  Sounds odd I know, but this is powerful preventative medicine and will save you a lot of grief.  You are lubricating the areas of your body that are exposed to the outside world, offering you protection you and lubricating you.  Also do self massage with oil before or after showering.  Very powerful for relaxing your central nervous system and boosting your immune system.  The skin is our largest organ, protect it well and avoid chemicals found in lotions and some soaps and shampoos.  Oiling will prevent dryness which will soon be followed by snottyness.  Dryness comes before the cold.  You can also use a humidifier at night. Put one in your kids room starting in September!  
    • How to use the oil:  Put some untoasted sesame oil in  a pump or spray bottle.  While in the shower or bath apply it to the whole body.  You can use the oil instead of soap, or after the soap.  It works just as well with antibacterial and antiviral properties.  It gets into every nook and cranny and dissolves anything foreign.   Teach them to put it in their nose.  Kids like sticking their fingers up their noses.  When I can’t get Bodhi to do it easily I add it to the star chart, do it while he is watching a movie and make it a requirement in order to keep watching.  I use a cotton swap and get it in that way to his ears and nose.  You can warm the oil a bit too and that is nice.  With a dropper you can put it in the ears.  Lie on the bed and do one ear at a time.  Allow it to soak in and then put some tissue to catch it as you do the other side.  I sleep so well when I do the oil in my ears at night.  Here is what Dr. Douillard says, ” Ear oil is another cold remedy that antidotes the end-of-summer and fall dryness. It is an absolute must in my house. Preventively, from September to March, I will drop warm ear oil in my kids’ ears while they sleep, twice a month. If they come down with a runny nose or a scratchy throat, I will use garlic-based ear oil twice a day until they are well, usually a day or two. Ear oil lubricates the Eustachian tubes, which helps support better lymph flow through the cervical lymph, which governs upper respiratory immunity.  Your local natural foods store likely carries a variety of ear oil products.”   read more from him here

3.  Warm it and spice it!  Go for warmer foods as it gets colder out and use spices like turmeric, cinnamon, cardamon and nutmeg.  I add all of these to my oats.  I add tumeric root in smoothies (which I make at room temperature), and tumeric powder to most everything like roasted veggies, rice, and eggs.  Ginger is great too in smoothies and with cooking.  Avoid cold beverages, they are shocking not the system, contracting, and make you cold.

4.  Sleep well with these tips!!!  Go to sleep before 10.  These are the best hours of sleep and you will be more in align with nature.  If we didn’t live in boxes with electricity then we would naturally do this.  This is what your body wants and needs.  Remember the saying, “Early to Bed and Early to Rise Make a Person Healthy Wealthy and Wise!”  Well, it’s true.  Ayurveda says there is no such thing as night owls, only people out of sync.  Whatever you do at night, choose sleep and do it in the morning.  If you get 8 hours from 10-6 vs 8 hr from 12-8 you will be so much more rested, healthier, and have more energy.  Why?  Sleep before midnight is worth double.  That is when our adrenals rest and when deep healing and detoxifying happen in the body.   Try it for yourself and see!

  • Pre Highschool kids should get to sleep by 8pm                        Everyone else by 10pm
  • Have an early light dinner around 5 or 6pm.  When we go to bed with food in our belly then the body has to put 60-70% of its energy into digestion.  So the deep healing and detoxifying that should be happening doesn’t.  We also do not sleep as deeply.  We evolved to eat during daylight hours.  It was safer that way.  So have lunch be your biggest meal and go light at dinner with soups and salads.  If you or your child needs something before bed, go for a piece of fruit or a warm glass of milk with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamon.  Something easy to digest.

  • I use to eat at 8 or 9 and now we eat at 5.  It works so much better.  I sleep better and have more energy.  My body is less toxic as easily seen on my tongue and in my joints as a lack of pain., create a relaxing evening with some movement (like a walk withyour family), and some relaxation.  Avoid the screens at night as they stimulate your brain and make falling asleep hard.  Feel when you get tired and follow it down!

  • Warm milk with ghee, cinnamon, cardamon and nutmeg (tumeric too) is yummy and helps get you to sleep.  (If you are snotty you may want to avoid dairy).  You will wake up refresh and energized with this routine.  I put the milk in the blender with some dates, cinnamon, small amount of cardamon, nutmeg and ginger.  Then I heat it and add a small bit of ghee.  Here are some other recipes from banyan botanicals. 

5.  Hydrate!!  Drink water between meals and cut down or eliminate caffiene, alcohol and sugary drinks.  First thing in the morning drink warm water until you fully eliminate.  Then you won’t reabsorb the toxins back into the body.  Flush out your system so it can work well.

Stay hydrated – drink water!!!!   I have to work at this with my little one.   I offer him water first thing in the morning room temperature or warm.  Sometimes I have to get creative to get him to drink it.  I do things like play a game where the animals all want to drink it and then give it to him, or I use a straw that turns colors when you drink out of it.  He plays puppy and retrieves and gets it as a treat when he gets back.  I point out to him signs of dehydration like stinky breath, dry lips, dark pee, or having not peed yet.  He is 3 and knows the words hydrate and dehydrate.  I came up with a game for him with stars.
Bodhi's star gameWe all need to stay dehydrated.  Then drink water between meals.  It feels so good.  The cells can absorb plain water more easily than water with something in it.  If something is attached to it like caffeine, sugar, artificial sweeteners, etc. then it may not get absorbed into the cells staying between the cells and getting flushed out.  There is nothing that satisfies thirst better than water.  It is exactly what your body needs.

6.  Lower Stress!!!  Stress puts us into fight or flight.  The blood then goes to the periphery and the body will not be able to fight off bacteria and viruses in the gut or elsewhere because it is preoccupied with survival.  This is true even if we are not moving but have the stress response due to our thoughts and fears.    Meditating  daily is a great tool for learning how to better calm the brain.

Stress Reduction Tip:

First recognize your stress response.  Do you shoulders round forward.  Do you feel it in your stomach, heart, back, throat?  To shift, ground down through your feet!  Feels your feet on the earthed the connection and support.  Then breath deeply!  Relax!

RECIPE BOO CANDY

Here is a recipe from Cate Stillman with Yoga Healer for ‘Boo Candy’ which prevents colds!!!

Use a cutting board and knife

  • Add 1/2 cup raw honey to the cutting board.
  • Add 3 tbsp. turmeric powder (you can dry roast it first in a skillet for added benefit).
  • Add 2 tsp. ginger powder
  • Add 1/2 tsp. cloves

Cut the spices into the honey with the knife until you have a smooth texture. Add more spices for desired taste. Store in a small tin or small glass jar. Put on the kitchen table in reach for all ages. Little ones like to roll it into pea-sized balls.
